The people of Llanmor, a small seaside town in North Wales, are celebrating after they raised enough money to save their 150-year-old pier.

The Victorian pier, which stretches 300 metres into the Irish Sea, was badly damaged during a storm two winters ago. Engineers said it was no longer safe, and the local council announced that it could not afford the repairs, which would cost around £2 million. The engineers also warned that, without urgent work, parts of the pier could fall into the sea within a few years. Many people feared that the pier would be demolished.

However, residents refused to give up. A group of volunteers set up a campaign called 'Save Our Pier' and started fundraising. Over the past eighteen months, they have organised concerts, sponsored swims, cake sales and even a football match between local firefighters and teachers. The campaign's website received donations from more than 20,000 people, including some from as far away as Australia and Canada.

'We're absolutely thrilled,' said Gwen, one of the organisers. 'So many people have childhood memories of fishing here or eating chips at the end of the pier.' 'It's the heart of our town.'

Work on the pier is expected to begin in the spring and should take about a year. When it reopens, it will include a new café and a small museum about the town's history. Local businesses hope it will bring more tourists back to the area, which has struggled since the storm.
