Banff National Park, in the Rocky Mountains of Canada, welcomes millions of visitors every year. We spoke to Daniel, who has worked there as a park ranger for twelve years.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: Honestly, there's no typical day, and that's what I love about the job. In summer, I might spend the morning checking trails and the afternoon giving a talk to visitors about wildlife. In winter, a lot of my work is about avalanche safety.
Q: Have you ever been in danger?
A: A few times, yes. Once, I came round a corner and found a grizzly bear and her two cubs about twenty metres away. I stayed calm, spoke quietly and slowly backed away. Luckily, she wasn't interested in me!
Q: What's the biggest problem in the park today?
A: Probably people who don't follow the rules. Some visitors feed the animals or get too close to take photos. When animals get used to human food, they can become aggressive, and that's dangerous for both people and animals.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is visiting for the first time?
A: Respect nature. Keep your distance from wildlife, take your rubbish home with you and always tell someone where you're going before you go hiking. And don't forget to look up at night, because the stars here are breathtaking.
